5 kinds of white space

This was an article I wrote for publication, but nobody wanted to pick it up this season. Since it was getting dusty, I figured it was time to post it here.

from my mailbox- Chase Auto Finance takes a step

I enjoy seeing transpromotional documents in my mail. Chase Auto Finance recently upgraded their monthly statement mailing to me. Although a step in the right direction, they wasted a lot of effort for what they produced. Here it is:

a notable absence in the case studies

I’ve been reading as many case studies as I can get my hands on (please send me any good ones you find). I’ve noticed that the reference quotes are generally from the marketing and financial people who are ultimately accountable for the success of their transpromotional document program. Performing better and faster are important, and it’s great to hear from these people about their successes, but an important constituency is conspicuous in their absence. But designers and IT people are underrepresented. They are ultimately the people who are responsible for the success of the tactical implementation.
